Made in Basque Country, Spain
North American hatters have been importing European berets for centuries. The term “Basque Beret”, once an indication of the best quality berets in the world, is today used rather carelessly and often is nothing more than marketing lingo - a disingenuous gimmick. The berets may not even have come from Basque country. In the 27 years that we have been selling headwear, we have seen even the best quality imported European-made beret slowly erode in quality. The sweatband is now vinyl and not leather, the sizes are inconsistent, the label is glued to the interior and not sewn, etc. The people at Jaxon Hats set out to reverse this trend and to reintroduce to the N. American market a true, highest-quality, Basque beret. The result is the product you see here. Don’t be fooled by the low price, Jaxon is the direct importer, no middlemen, and the objective is to compete with the popular European import alluded to earlier that has kept its price in the forties and fifties by lowering the quality.
Okay, enough of an introduction - here are the specs: This highest-quality beret is made in the heart of Basque country in the Pyrenees Mountains by a 148-year old beret manufacturer. The material is pure virgin wool, impermeable (waterproof), and is made of the finest quality European-made felt (felt quality and weight is a huge factor in hat making - a hat can never be better than the quality of the material that it starts with). The sweatband is genuine leather. A satin lining is sewn at the interior tip (but not on the sides so that the felt will not suffocate your head - breathing combined with warmth is the objective here). A label that includes the Jaxon logo ” and reads “Authentic Basque Beret” and “Impermeable Pure Virgin Wool” is sewn (not glued) to the lining. Colors: Black and Navy. Perhaps you have been following the controversy over the issuing of black berets to the entire U.S. Army. This is the beret. The elite Rangers were once the only U.S. soldiers who could wear black berets. Understandably many of these fine soldiers and heroes in various conflicts around the world are not happy about the replacement of ball cap-style field caps and other headgear with black berets. Others, like Army Chief of Staff General Eric Shinseki who ordered the change, feel that the berets look very professional and raise morale. This 100% wool beret is made by Parkhurst; it is the same beret that has been issued to the Army (see image insert of Parkhurst factory). The beret is emblazoned with a blue patch representing the Continental Army, with 13 stars for the original colonies. Color: Black. Sizes: 6 3/4 to 7 7/8.

This wool felt beret is made in N. America by a manufacturer who supplies berets for the American military (Green Berets)as well as for the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. There are two unique design elements on this beret: 1: The semi-circle cardboard insert. This enables the wearer to create a sharp angle on the beret, as well as the spot to display your emblem or pin. 2: The leather binding (edge) envelopes a nylon web band that ends in a bow, this is used to size the beret. This style beret was worn in battle by Viscount Montgomery, the hero of El Alamein. By popular demand, we now have an all-wool, military style beret that is less expensive than the official USA Army style. The quality is still very good as this beret is cotton lined, has a grosgrain binding at the edge of the opening, two eyelets on the right side, and a half-moon stay in the right front of the hat. Color: Black, Navy Blue, Green and Red. Sizes: From 55 centimeters (6 7/8) to 62 centimeters (7 3/4). Sorry, but we have sold out of the Black in 7 3/4.
