Western stores frequently sell hatter’s brushes for this dusting job. Use a dark-colored brush for dark hats and a light colored brush for light hats.” Furthermore, brush your hat in a counter-clockwise direction, against the lay of the nap, so that the felt is worked well and dust is best removed. Prized by antique collectors, hatpins were once commonplace, and controversial. As women’s hats grew more extravagant in the 19th century, ornamented and jeweled pins, sometimes reaching 14 inches in length, were used to hold these elaborate hats in place. In 1908, an English judge, fearing that the pins could be used as weapons in his court, ordered a group of suffragettes to remove their hatpins and hats. Steam a minute or two, and then give another turn to the screw that stretches the two half-moon wood blocks. Steam again, screw again. After ten minutes, my hat was a size-and-a-half larger. Wow! I left it to dry and cool for a couple of hours and it fits perfectly now. This hat is a 5X fur felt top-quality hat. It was 7 3/4 and too small, and the maker didn’t make it any larger.
